PANTHERTOWN
One of my favorite spots in Western North Carolina is the Panthertown Valley, located near Lake Toxaway, North Carolina. Panthertown is a treasured 6,311-acre backcountry and bear sanctuary featuring more than 30 miles of public trails located in the Nantahala National Forest, on the Eastern Continental Divide, between the Great Smokies and Blue Ridge Mountains.
Shining Rock via the “Shining Creek” and “Old Butt Knob” Trails
I first hiked here in the late 1980s as a high school senior; it was a trendy place to camp, swim, fish, relax, and have a festive time. The “Shining Rock Creek” or “Old Butt Knob” trails will lead you to the mythical and fabulous Shining Rock. “The Cherokees say that they have always been here in the southern mountains, that the Creator put them here. The first man and first woman, Kanati and Selu, lived at Shining Rock Wilderness, near present-day Waynesville, and the first Cherokee village was at Kituhwa Mound, near present-day Bryson City. ”. Shope Creek Watershed Area
Shope Creek is the closest Pisgah Access to Little Bee Woods and is a fun hike for the family. The area is small; at only about 1700 acres, it’s possible to hike for several miles on cleared trails. Beautiful forests, cascading streams, small waterfalls, and some cliff-top views round off the attractions that can be found in this little gem of an area located very close to the City of Asheville. With elevations from around 2700 ft to 5230 ft on Lane Pinnacle, the site has over a half-mile of elevation change and a surprisingly diverse and robust ecosystem.
Bearwallow Mountain
Bearwallow Mountain is twenty-five miles from Little Bee Woods and is the perfect place to take the family for an outing. Bearwallow Mountain offers exceptional scenery as a reward for a short hike! At 4,232 feet above sea level, with a grassy meadow at its summit, the mountain features a nearly 360° view, including Mt. Mitchell and Mt. Pisgah. Its breathtaking vistas also include a birds-eye view of Hickory Nut Gorge, downtown Hendersonville, and the high country of South Carolina. A historic fire lookout tower occupies the summit, as do grazing cattle who call the mountaintop home.
The trail to the summit is approximately one mile each way. You can also follow a gravel road back to the parking area for a loop hike. Bearwallow is an excellent place for a short day hike, or combine it with other trails in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge, such as the Trombatore Trail or the newly extended Wildcat Rock Trail.
